Full Hearing Assessment
A number of tests are available to help discover the nature of hearing abilities and difficulties, and will allow us to determine an appropriate course of action to help you hear better.
Full diagnostic hearing tests at Prairie Hearing Centre include:
Pure Tone Audiometry: An audiogram using air and bone conduction testing helps to determine the patient’s hearing ability relative to normal adult hearing levels by type and degree of hearing loss. This information is critical to determine if medical or surgical intervention is possible, or if hearing aids may help. Hearing loss can be sensorineural (internal and permanent hearing loss which is the most common type of hearing loss), conductive (middle-ear related), or a combination of the two.
Speech Testing: The range of audible sounds and understanding - not just the degree of hearing loss - can vary considerably from person to person. Unfortunately, when a hearing loss is present, it is usually not just the volume of sound that is softer but our ability to understand words and conversation can be compromised. Through speech testing, we can estimate the amount of conversational words that are understood by the brain, giving us an accurate knowledge on the amount of internal 'functional' hearing which can reflect real-life performance.
Immittance Testing & Otoscopy: Otoscopy is the magnified viewing of the external ear, ear canal space, and some parts of the middle ear including the eardrum (tympanic membrane), while tympanometry assesses the mechanical function of the middle ear that can't be seen, including pressure mechanisms and Eustachian tube function. Hearing loss caused by middle ear blockages or malfunctions can often be treated medically or surgically, and testing of this middle ear space allows us to assess if hearing difficulties can be fixed medically.
